Three detainees are prosecuted for the murder of a photographer in eastern Cuba

The Ministry of the Interior of the province of Guantánamo announced, in a brief statement, the arrest last Saturday of the murderers of the photographer Orlando Tamayo Guevara. The three detainees, whose identity has not been revealed by the authorities, were found in possession of money and two motorized electrical from the victim.

Information, spread on Facebook by the official Edwin Levis, emphasizes that the three were captured “in less than 24 hours” and that they “acknowledged their direct participation” in the murder of Tamayo, who owned Burlesque Studio. The attackers will be prosecuted for homicide.

Levis published images of the stolen objects, including backpacks, a pair of tennis shoes and some plastic bags, stolen from the photographer’s residence, located at 703 Máximo Gómez street, between Narciso López and Jesús del Sol streets in the city of Guantánamo.

On social networks, users who reacted to the publication about the crime ask for justice. “Enough of looking with pity at all those who murder, assault and want to implant disorder, fear and fear,” said Javier Barrientos, a resident of Guantánamo. Others, more radical, such as Ofelia Rosa Díaz Velázquez, from Havana, called for the “death penalty” for the confessed murderers.

The three detainees, whose identity has not been revealed by the authorities, were found in possession of money and two electric “motorinas” belonging to the victim.

The Constitutional and Legal Affairs Commission of the Parliament, meeting in a session on July 18, offered figures on crime on the Island and the crimes they consider to be a priority. Homicides were not on the list. Last June, however, the Government revealed that the violent crimes they represented 8.5% of the total illegal activities that took place in the first half of 2023.

Days before Tamayo’s murder, the Cuban authorities reported the capture of three implicated in the murder of broadcaster David Alexis González Joseph, also a native of Guantánamo. The collaborator of the official radio station CMKS was killed inside his home on April 26.

in an editorial posted last junethe official newspaper Granma He assured that these types of cases are “shamelessly magnified or manipulated by enemy digital sites.” For the regime, the information “stimulates” an alleged scenario of instability that seeks to “discredit the international prestige of Cuba as a safe tourist destination, to hit one of the main economic sources of the country.”

Recently, before the National Assembly, Miguel Díaz-Canel assured that there is an “imperial effort” to create a climate of tension and citizen mistrust that erodes “popular unity” in Cuba.
