The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in the company of the Dominican Navy, the Dominican Council of Fisheries and Agriculture (Codopesca) and the Dominican Foundation for Marine Studies (Fundemar), arrested the man who killed, with his boat, a shark beach at Barco Bar Beach, in Bayahibe.
Jony Joan Ciprian, captain of the ship, was arrested and handed over to the National Police. In the next few hours, he will be brought to justice, under the protection of Law 64-00 on the Environment and Natural Resources.
After learning about the crime against the shark that was in the gestation stage, Ministry personnel went to the place to start an investigation and find the person responsible.
It is recalled that Resolution No. 0023/2017 prohibits the capture and commercialization of species of sharks, rays, herbivorous reef fish, and sea urchins, as well as their derived products.
The blue shark or blue shark (prionace glaucous) is classified in the “near threatened” category, on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and among its main threats are accidental hunting and human activity.
Violations of said Resolution will be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of General Law 64-00, without prejudice to the provisions of other current legal provisions. Similarly, it is arranged to support all initiatives seeking to educate and raise awareness about the protection of these species.
It is a function of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resourcesregulate the protection and conservation of all marine species, in accordance with the principles set forth in national legislation and in accordance with the international commitments contracted by the Dominican State.
The Arrecifes del Sureste Marine Sanctuary is a protected area of 7,862.59 km that includes territories located in the provinces of San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana and La Altagracia, on the southeast coast of the Caribbean Sea. The basic objective of the conservation unit is to safeguard the natural habitat and the special environments that are formed along the marine platform in the southeast of the island.
