Experts from different medical societies made a call to eradicate the stigmas and preconceptions related to obesity and change the idea that it is caused by “lack of will” on the eve of world obesity daythis Thursday March 4th.
“Despite the guilt and stares that some obese people still feel, science has shown that there are dozens of factors that explain its development and today it is known that it is not triggered by lack of will, nor is it resolved in a way as simple as ‘eating less and moving more’“, the professionals pointed out in a statement.

The medical societies that participate in this awareness initiative are the Argentine Society of Nutrition (SAN), Argentine Association of Dieticians and Nutritionists Dietitians (AADYND), Argentine Society of Medical Nutritionists (SAMENUT), Argentine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SAEM), Argentine Society of Obesity and Eating Disorders (SAOTA), Argentine Society of Obesity Surgery (SACO), Argentine Society of Medicine (SAM) and the Argentine Cardiological Foundation (FCA), sponsored by the Novo Nordisk laboratory.
There they seek to spread some reasons that explain the complexity of obesity, its development and its approach, while emphasizing the concept “it is not your fault, nor lack of will”.
In addition, they maintain that if it were easy to lose weight, “We should be getting better and better, but that is not what the statistics reflect” and that “achieving weight loss and sustaining it over time is a complex challenge that requires a comprehensive approach.”
On the other hand, medical societies added that the figures in our country show “a worrying context”; since, in 5 years; “The proportion of adult Argentines with obesity went from 20.8% to 25.4, practically an increase of 25%”.
affects health
Another point highlighted by specialists, is that this disease puts health at riskthat is, “more awareness should be raised in our country about the negative impact that obesity can have on health,” said Paola Harwicz, cardiologist and nutrition specialist, former director of the Cardiometabolism Council of the Argentine Society of Cardiology .

Specialists also warn about the importance of “patterns from childhood”, since a recent report by the World Health Organization establishes that, if concrete measures are not taken to change the current and future reality, by 2030 the 27 .2% of children between 5 and 9 years old will be obese.
AND They invite to eliminate stigmatization and discrimination about the disease.
Regarding how a treatment plan should be based on the reasons for the disease, some important points to take into account are highlighted, such as improving eating patterns and emotions; lead an active life; make good decisions in places where you buy food and always try to have healthy options at home; acquire an eating behavior, metabolism.
Finally, they invite you to a free day in the open air, with talks, physical activity, recommendations for healthy living and multiple activities for the whole family, next Saturday, March 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Palermo Woods, in the intersection of the avenues Infanta Isabel and Avenida Iraola.
