They see trouble in Haiti threaten the DR

The main threat that hangs over the Dominican Republic at the moment is the conflict in Haiti and the presence in the national territory of more than a million undocumented immigrants from the neighboring nation, warned this morning the border senator and spokesman for the People’s Force, Dionis Sanchez.

He said that the situation is complicated by the denunciation of the palace official, Economy Minister Pavel Isa Contreras, who accuses Dominicans of racism and of hating Haitians.

But the spokesman for the block of senators of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Franklin Romero, clarified that the statements of the Minister of Economy do not represent the position of the Dominican government, in relation to the neighboring nation. He added that the Dominicans have been the support and help of the Haitians for many years.

Sánchez summoned President Luis Abinader to confirm whether what Isa Contreras said is the position of his government, since no one in his administration has come out to deny it.

“In relation to the main threat that this country has, that has our sovereignty, is the Haitian conflict, it is the Haitian problem and we have lived with our backs to that reality, then the government has to clarify if the position of this minister is the position of the government because nobody has said anything, the spokespersons have not come out to say, no, that is the position of that person,” he said. Sanchez.

He added that “he (Isa Contreras) said it where they were interviewing him as a government minister, so if that minister accuses us Dominicans of being xenophobic, of being racist, then we want to know if that is the position that the government has in relation to to us Dominicans”.

He maintained that “it is not true that the Dominican people are racist, it is not true that the Dominican people are xenophobic, because more than a million Haitians live here illegally and here you do not see anyone persecuted because of their color, because here We are mulattoes, multi-racists, we do not have a conflict of that nature, but we have a threat to our sovereignty, the main threat to the Dominican people, whether they want to understand it or not, is the Haitian conflict, which is getting worse every day.”
