They repatriate another 52 Cuban rafters who were intercepted before reaching the Florida Keys

The United States Coast Guard continues its operations to repatriate Cubans and this Tuesday transferred 52 people to the island aboard the ship Isaac May. According to a statement, these rafters were stopped in six interceptions off the Florida Keys.

Through its social networks, the federal agency has warned rafters that as the Hurricane seasonthese rustic raft trips will be even more treacherous.

The lieutenant Simon Juul Hindsgaul Through a statement, he urged Cubans “not to throw themselves into the sea,” in addition to warning that “the possibility of being detained by Coast Guard crews while illegally migrating through the Caribbean Sea is high.”

According to data provided by the US Coast Guard, since October 1, 2021, crews have intercepted 2,436 Cubans. Between last Saturday and this Tuesday, a total of 117 Cuban nationals have been detained before setting foot on one of the Florida beaches.

On the other hand, this Tuesday the Border Patrol rescued eight Cubans who remained stranded on an uninhabited island located 20 miles west of Key West. As reported by the agent Walter Slosar through his social networks: “some good samaritans met the migrants and notified the authorities”.

Officer Slosar had also reported just last Monday the rescue by agents from the Miami sector of another group of 12 other Cubans stranded in Cayos Marquesas. There were nine men and three women at the scene. “No injuries were reported.”

Figures from the Customs and Border Protection Office show that 234,088 irregular migrants were detained on the southern border of the United States in April, 5.4% more than in the previous month. Of these, 35,049 are Cuban, which represents a record number.
