They premiere the documentary "Madelaine", a short about the Nicaraguan activist who read the list of those assassinated by Ortega in 2018

Madelaine Caracas was one of the first visible faces in the social protests of April 2018, she joined the demonstrations due to the ineffectiveness of the Nicaraguan regime to put out the fire in the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, then due to the failed reforms to the pension system.

On May 16, 2018, at the first national dialogue table, and with the entire country watching, Madelaine yelled at Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo the names of those killed in the social uprising. The activist led marches, sit-ins and other civic demonstrations demanding justice.

Her role in the April crisis led her into exile in Costa Rica, the country that has welcomed thousands of Nicaraguans since 2018. After leaving painting, already in the neighboring country she prepared to return to her facet as an artist. This entire process is portrayed in the documentary “Madelaine”, directed by the Nicaraguan filmmaker Leonor Zúniga.

“This short documentary follows the activist Madelaine Caracas during her exile in Costa Rica, when she prepares to hold her first painting exhibition,” Zúniga described on her Twitter account.

“It was an honor to film Madelaine at this extraordinary time in her life, and I greatly appreciate her patience, vulnerability and openness in telling her story,” he added.

The original idea for the short, which lasts 28 minutes, was from the Nicaraguan producer Roberto Guillén, who decided to make a series of documentaries about Nicaraguan artists in exile, under the seal of his production company Tres Felices Tigres, the filmmaker revealed to the newspaper La Prensa .

The recordings of the documentary lasted three months and the edition took them two years. The short was released this Saturday, March 18, in the United States at the san diego film and soon it will have another premiere in Miami. Madeleine is currently in exile in Mexico.
