The corpse of the manatee Juanitawho preferred to live in the waters of the Ozama River was transferred this Sunday to National Aquarium Park to perform a necropsy in order to find the reasons for his death.

The lifeless body of the animal was found yesterday afternoon, Saturday, on the banks of the Isabela River without it being known so far what could have caused its death.

“There are no words that can express the size of the sorrow that surrounds us, Juanita, our pretty girl, left this physical plane, but not to be forgotten, but to be eternal in our minds and hearts,” she posted on her Instagram account. the National Zoological Park.

It is recalled that the manatee was released from its captivity in the National Aquarium in 2020 along with two other animals of the same species, Pepe and Lupita, in the Bayahibe Bay and in 2021 the mesh that protected the animals was removed, allowing them to They moved freely along the coast.

After this episode, Juanita traveled 100 kilometers to the Ozama and Isabela rivers and settled there where she fed mainly on the lilacs that grow in these tributaries.

The manatee’s cause of death is expected to be revealed in the next few hours.
