The organization SOS Nicaragua Italia sent a letter to the Pucciniano Festival Foundation to ask them to exclude the Nicaraguan delegation from their cultural event, which represents Laureano and Camila Ortega Murillo, children of the presidential couple, accused of being co-actors of the “repression in Nicaragua» which has been running since 2018.
«If the «mayor’s office of Milan and the Teatro la Scala “did without” a director, a personal friend of Vladimir Putin, for not speaking out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (March 2022), we would expect the same thing, that the Teatro Puccini, in Florence, does not have the presence of a delegation that represents a criminal dictatorship and that openly supports Vladimir Putin,” the agency said in a statement.
SOS Nicaragua Italy detailed that the Nicaraguans sent, representing the children of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, would be in Italy from July 8 to 25, 2022, invited by the Pucciniano Festival Foundation. Laureano and Camila cannot participate because they are sanctioned and cannot set foot in any country of the European Union, nor the United States or Canada.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the Pucciniano Festival Foundation and the Puccini Theater, the Ortega-Murillo couple and their children, as well as Vladimir Putin, are criminals against humanity. Would it be possible to count on your respect and empathy towards the people of Nicaragua who since April 2018 have been assassinated, exiled, impoverished and imprisoned by this family dictatorship?”, questioned the opposition bloc.
In addition, they maintain that “not making the Pucciniano Festival Foundation and the Puccini Theater available to the dictatorships would be a cultural, humanitarian and coherent gesture from Italy to 190 political prisoners and the democratization of Nicaragua.”
The Pucciniano Festival was founded in 1930 and is an event dedicated solely to the artist Giacomo Puccini. It is held annually in July and August in Torre del Lago, in Italy.
The Foundation is in charge of organizing the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, the production of operas, the promotion of music among young people and the staging of shows, specified in website of the Italian entity.
It also promotes musical activities creating the conditions for the conservation, enhancement, knowledge and dissemination of the artistic heritage of Giacomo Puccini and the environment and places where the master lived and composed his works.
