They assassinate a photographer in his Guantanamo house to rob him

Photographer Orlando Tamayo Guevara was murdered at his home in the city of Guantanamo this week during a robbery. According to neighbors, close to his house on Narciso López street, the thieves were looking for the safe and two electric motorcycles in the place.

Tamayo, who worked privately at Burlesque Studio, was dedicated to carrying out photo sessions of family celebrations, babies, pregnant women and, especially, the popular photos of young women when they turned 15.

In an emotional video posted on Facebook, Orlando Tamayo Díaz, son of the photographer, defined his father as an “excellent human being.” Resident in Texas, United States, the young man thanked his family and friends in Cuba who had given him their support in this difficult moment. “My father was a very dear person,” he stressed.

Father of three children and grandfather of four children, Tamayo is remembered as a kind and helpful person. His clients and friends have flooded the networks with messages of condolences and demanding a “strong hand” against crime

In his youth, Tamayo had graduated from the Guantánamo Pedagogical School and during the pandemic, he helped disseminate information about covid-19 and measures to protect themselves from the virus through WhatsApp groups.

This week it was learned that they had been arrested three individuals for the murder of broadcaster David Alexis González Joseph also in Guantanamo, on April 26. The announcer, who worked at the official CMKS radio station, was found dead inside his home.

Murders such as that of González Joseph or that of coachman Antonio Silvino Pérez, in Santa Clara, last May, indicate that violent robberies, in the streets or inside houses, are increasing in Cuba. At the same time, femicides are also common (there are already 53 so far in 2023) or theft of cattle and electric motorcycles.

In a note published last June, the Ministry of the Interior claimed that 90% of the cases in which firearms were used – whose number they did not provide – had been resolved with the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. However, he admitted that he only solved 60% of crimes without firearms.

For the ruling party, the news on crime is an exaggeration by the independent media, which “magnify” the facts to “subvert the order” and damage tourism. Recently, before the National Assembly, Miguel Díaz-Canel assured that there is an “imperial effort” to create a climate of insecurity and citizen mistrust that erodes “popular unity” in Cuba.

“For this reason, any criminal act is constantly exaggerated, fundamentally cases with violence and, in particular, those of gender violence,” he said.
