Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) asked President Gustavo Petro, in charge of Colombia since last August, not to take as a model the, in his opinion, populist policies implemented for decades in Argentina, because, he said, they lead to poverty.

“We hope that Petro realizes that the (populist) ideas of Argentina are going to bring a lot of poverty to Colombians“, Macri told the press after speaking at the VII Presidential Dialogue, held in Miami. Macri assured that the first statements and proposals of the Petro campaign “were not the best for the future of Colombia.”
The former Argentine president also made a defense of freedom, institutions and the right to a better life for all citizens of Latin America. “They want to govern us from the state, limiting our freedoms,” Macri said.
“The great challenge for those of us who love freedom is to fight so that our countries can develop“, he pointed out. He also recalled that Argentina has suffered since 2019 the largest emigration in its history, for which he advocated economic policies that prevent this flow.

“We have to prevent Latin America from continuing to lose its talented citizens who go to other places,” warned Macri, after calling for “the defense of the future of our young people.” “I propose to defend our ideas and take control of the public administration. That public officials come from a career and competition, and not that they be political militants,” he said.
They also participated in this VII Presidential Dialogue former presidents Iván Duque (Colombia), Jamil Mahuad (Ecuador), Jorge Tuto Quiroga (Bolivia), Vicente Fox (Mexico) and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez (Costa Rica), in addition to the former president of the Spanish Government José Mria Aznar.
Organized by the Mezerhane Endowed Chair of Miami Dade College (MDC), the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), the Atlantic Institute of Government and Diario Las Américas, the forum was opened by the president of the MDC, Madekine Pumariega, and the lieutenant governor of Florida, Jeanette Nuñez.
