Magnitude 5.1 earthquake affects the San Francisco Bay Area

OnCubaNews

Today Tuesday a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay Area.

The United States Geological Survey announced that it occurred 12 miles east of San Jose, near the Calaveras Fault, at a depth of about 4 miles.

The area is about 40 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco.

This earthquake was the largest the Bay Area has experienced in years.

The last notable earthquake was a 6.0 earthquake located near Napa in 2014.

Santa Cruz County reported no significant damage. Schools have resumed safely, according to the county.

A 3.1-magnitude aftershock followed about 5 minutes after the quake, the Service said.

Tuesday’s quake came just a week after the 33rd anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.9 and struck the Santa Cruz mountains on Oct. 17, 1989.

So there were 62 deaths and billions of dollars in damage.
