“There is geopolitical pressure from the US.”

On Tuesday, Joseph “Joe” Salazar, chargé d’affaires of the United States Embassy, held a two-hour meeting with Abdo Benítez, President of the Republic. This meeting occurs, coincidentally, when there is strong talk of a possible dismissal of Sandra Quiñónez, state attorney general for inaction in complaints that weigh on Horacio Cartes, former president of the Republic.

“We share with President Abdo the mutual interest in strengthening democratic institutions in this country. Especially, that the people receive justice and also continue their efforts to combat corruption and impunity”, was part of the speech given at a press conference, at the end of the meeting.

He also pointed out that both countries share an interest in continuing to cooperate to strengthen democratic institutions in order to ensure that the people receive justice.

BENITEZ
Víctor Raúl Benítez, economist, business analyst and director of the investment company Planner Capital, affirmed that Quiñónez always highlights the distinction he received from the US government. However, the interviewee clarifies that this type of recognition is usually given to motivate the recipient, to do more things from now on.

“There are several symptoms that indicate to us that there is geopolitical pressure from the United States. The European Union is watching us too. There is a geopolitical pressure to formalize a country informalized by the Brazilian economy”, she expressed.

PEACE CASTAING
Mario Paz Castaing, political analyst, affirmed for his part that we live in a supervised democracy and that this happens through the vulnerable institutions that lead to a weak democracy that exists in our country.

“They trust Paraguay as a strategic ally. In that context it happens. There is an interest in combating corruption and impunity. It is a gesture of support for the Government”, he commented.

For the analyst, the US is concerned about the balance in political contests, with respect to democratic processes. As well as the measures to be taken into account in defense of institutions against the advance of organized crime.

Finally, he said that it is evident that the United States is concerned about the political crisis generated around the state attorney general.

“No one can deny that there is international cooperation with Seprelad, Senad and the Public Ministry. In the cases of the González Daher brothers, they were present at the time of decision-making, ”he concluded.
