There are 2,000 places for workshops for older adults in Quito

In addition to the workshops there are services of psychology, physiotherapy, home visits and social work.

During the COVID-19 pandemicLuis Cárdenas, 72, learned to use a smartphone with which he gives his contact information when someone wants to buy the nuts he produces and sells. “I learned all this in the Experience Center of the Elderlythere in the valley of Los Chillos, where I live”, he says.

For Cárdenas, belonging to one of these groups of the Patronato San José is having the opportunity to feel that despite your age, “you can continue learning.”

He’s not the only one. In the experience program Elderly and in 60 and PiQuito there are 20,000 beneficiaries; of them, 12,877 registered in the workshops between January and February 2022.

Zaida Valarezo, head of the Unit of the Elderlysays that for this year they have 2,000 more quotas, so that the older adults access, not only the workshopsbut to this service that also has care in psychology, physiotherapy, home visits and social work.

Valarezo points out that these spaces allow improving the quality of life of the older adultswhich are usually a forgotten population and that require activities, since the sedentary lifestyle of the mind and body increases the risk of having diseases or cognitive deterioration.

The older adults can register by approaching the Experience centers of the Elderly, with a copy of the identity card, light form, vaccination card or certificate, family reference data, email and telephone number. (AVV)
