The United States confirmed the appointment of Hugo Rodríguez as the possible replacement for the current ambassador of the North American country in Managua, Kevin Sullivan, this despite the fact that he was branded as “interfering and disrespectful” by the Nicaraguan regime.

Rodríguez has promised to continue demanding freedom for the political prisoners of the dictatorship, as well as respect for democracy and the cessation of human rights violations.

“I promise to work with Congress, inter-institutional colleagues and international partners to press for the return to democracy, respect for human rights and the freedom of political prisoners in Nicaragua,” were the diplomat’s words that caused the annoyance of the Ortega regime.

The Senate confirmed on September 29, four ambassadors nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as representatives in Belize, Kyrgyzstan, Nicaragua and Panama.

For his part, the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, affirms that “the Nicaraguan dictatorship shouts a lot, but it knows that it is essential for its economic interests to have a United States ambassador. If they do not accept it, as they said, it would be a negative milestone in their authoritarian drift.

On July 28, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo decided to withdraw the approval granted to candidate Hugo Rodríguez as United States ambassador to Nicaragua.

Foreign Minister Dennis Moncada appeared at a surprise conference stating that they would not allow any diplomat “to disrespect, offend, humiliate, threaten, star in or be a factor of interference or interventionism in the internal affairs of our country.” In addition, he indicated that this communication was addressed to the State Department and Ambassador Sullivan.

Rodríguez indicated during his speech that “if they confirm me as ambassador, I will commit myself to voices from all over Nicaraguan society to share our vision of inclusive economic growth, as expressed by the president (Joe Biden) at the recent Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles. (California)”.
