The US announces a new immigration control process for Venezuelans

According to the statement, “this effort aims to improve border security by reducing the number of Venezuelans seeking to enter the United States irregularly.”


The US Department of Homeland Security announced through a statement of immediate execution, about a migration program that will be carried out in conjunction with Mexico “to reduce the number of people who arrive at our southwest border and create a more orderly and secure process for people fleeing the humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela.”

The migration program aims to “address the most acute irregular migration and help alleviate pressure on the cities and states that receive these people.”

According to The documentwhose validity is immediate: “Venezuelans who enter the United States between ports of entry, without authorization, will be returned to Mexico.” Under the program, a sponsor residing in the US must apply for the migrant’s entry and will be cleared by air.

These actions make it clear that there is a legal and orderly way for Venezuelans to enter the United States, and legal entry is the only way,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

“Those who attempt to illegally cross the southern border of the United States will be returned to Mexico and will not be eligible. for this process in the future. Those who follow the legal process will have the opportunity to safely travel to the United States and be eligible to work here.”

To be eligible, Venezuelans must have a sponsor in the US who will provide financial and other support; pass rigorous biometric and biographical controls of Homeland Security and Public Safety; and must have completed immunizations and other health requirements.

Conversely, Venezuelans will not be eligible for this program if they have been ordered removed from the United States within the previous five years; have crossed without authorization between ports of entry after the date of the announcement; having entered Mexico or Panama irregularly after the date of the announcement (October 12); be a permanent resident or dual national of any country other than Venezuela; currently have refugee status in any country; or not having completed immunizations and other public health requirements.

The statement emphasizes that Venezuelans should not travel to Mexico to try to enter the United States.

The United States also plans to offer additional security assistance to “help regional partners address migration challenges in the Darien Gap.”

“Our comprehensive effort to reduce the irregular migration of Venezuelans also includes a new process to legally and safely bring up to 24,000 qualified Venezuelans to the United States. The United States will not implement this process without Mexico maintaining its independent effort, but parallel to accept the return of Venezuelan citizens who skip this process and try to enter irregularly, “says the statement issued by the US Department of Homeland Security.
