The US agrees to receive Mexican agents to combat arms trafficking

U.S accepted the sending of 23 Mexican agents to its territory to work in the fight against arms trafficking, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported this Saturday.

“The United States accepted that Mexico send (…) 23 agents who are going to concentrate on the issue of weapons,” the foreign minister told parliamentarians from the ruling party. Brunette and invoked the “principle of reciprocity”.

He indicated that Security agents Americans work in Mexican territory and their presence and activities are regulated by the Mexican National Security Law approved in 2020, which established new parameters for this type of cooperation.

The leftist president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been a harsh critic of the actions that elements of US agencies had in Mexico in previous governments, alleging that, on occasions, they attacked the sovereignty and laws of the country.

One of the cases most cited by the president is the “Fast and Furious” operation, between 2006 and 2011, when Washington agencies illegally introduced weapons to Mexico in order to track whether they reached the hands of mafias, but they ended up being used in crimes within the country.

“Now we will also have agents in the United States for the issue at hand, which are mainly weapons, although not only, but mainly,” Ebrard explained in a teleconference from Honduras, where he makes an official visit.

The Mexican strategy against arms trafficking also includes a historic lawsuit filed last August in a federal court in Boston against large manufacturers in that country, whom it accuses of carrying out “negligent and illicit” trade in their products.

Mexico and Washington They launched a “new stage” of security cooperation at the end of last year after the visit in October by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

To do this, they installed a “high-level group” that includes five work teams to address issues such as the fight and persecution of criminal groups that operate in the two countries.
