The US advances in preparations for the Summit of the Americas despite criticism

Lacalle Pou, president of Uruguay, will be present at the Summit of the Americas while Pedro Castillo requests permission in Peru to attend. Washington wants to achieve a migration agreement at the hemispheric meeting

The Summit of the Americas, an event that has become controversial due to the position of the United States (USA) of not inviting countries like Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, continues to generate resentment in the countries of the region and even more so when the summit was recently held of ALBA from where the so-called “exclusion” was rejected.

However, the preparations for the meeting in Los Angeles continue inexorably. The undersecretary of the Department of State for the Western Hemisphere, Brian A. Nichols, assured in his social networks this June 1 that there is a team working on the “last round of negotiations” in the city that will host the event.

He stressed that the Summit Implementation Review Group will soon deliver an agenda for “digital transformation” in the region.

The day before, a senior official from the United States Department of State assured that her country will seek to have an immigration agreement at the Summit of the Americas despite the almost ratified absence of Venezuela and Nicaragua at the continental meeting, while a cloud of doubts hangs over countries like Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba and other countries.

What is wanted, according to this official, is that there can be a joint declaration of all the attending countries in which they share the vision of the United States to face the migratory issue, just as it wants to deal with other issues that it considers important, such as the crisis economy in the wake of the pandemic, the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on food prices and the challenges to democracy on the continent.

They clarified in the State Department that the migration pact they want to reach will not be binding and that it is focused on fighting “the criminal smuggling industry that is taking advantage of the historical flows” of migrants.

Uruguay, one of the countries invited to the Summit of the Americas, will be represented by its president, Luis Lacalle Pou, after the Senate of his country approved the president’s departure from the territory for more than 48 hours.

On the other hand, the Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, requested permission from the Andean nation’s Congress after receiving an invitation from the White House to attend the hemispheric meeting. However, his participation may be in doubt due to the investigation announced in recent days for alleged corruption.

Meanwhile, the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, expressed on Tuesday, May 31, that he respected the White House’s decision not to invite Venezuela, Nicaragua and to doubt Cuba for the Summit of the Americas, stressing that as the host, You have the right to invite whoever you want.

“We will respect, as we must respect, the position of the United States,” added the Dominican president, who confirmed his attendance at the meeting in Los Angeles.

Abinader recalled that his country will host the Ibero-American Summit in March 2023 and assured that, in this case, they will invite “all the countries” of the region.

Parallel to the Summit of the Americas, some 150 organizations from the US and Latin America want to convene the People’s Summit for Democracy, which will serve to discuss immigration and minority issues.

The alternative summit aims to address concerns about immigration rules such as the controversial Title 42, which allows immigrants to be immediately expelled for health reasons, and the need to approve immigration reform in the US, among other concerns.
