The United States donates to Nicaragua more than 600 thousand doses of Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19

The United States Embassy in Nicaragua reported the arrival of 657,540 doses of Pfizer vaccines against COVID-19 that arrived on the morning of June 24 at the Augusto C. Sandino Airport as a donation from the North American country through the COVAX mechanism.

The donation was received by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Carlos Sáenz; the Minister of Health, Martha Reyes; and Dr. Cristhian Toledo, Director of Health Surveillance, in the presence of the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Ana Solís-Ortega; and the charge d’affaires of the US Embassy, ​​Timothy Stater. Soon, Nicaragua will receive approximately 1.4 million Pfizer doses to supply to children.

“With the donation of Pfizer vaccines received to date, we are reaching almost 1 million doses of vaccines, a contribution of almost 20 million dollars in assistance from the United States through USAID, to prevent the spread of the COVID pandemic. -19 in Nicaragua,” said Stater during the delivery.

The US representative stated that “Pediatric Pfizer, the first batch will be arriving in the next few weeks and this will really help a lot and we are pleased with that.” The doses of vaccines delivered today will be applied to people over 18 years of age.

On June 23, the World Bank approved a loan to Nicaragua equivalent to 116 million dollars to “increase response capacities in the fight against COVID-19.” According to the report, the funds will be directed to the acquisition of vaccines and supplies to combat the pandemic.

The loan seeks to expand the response to the virus and communicable diseases, vaccination days with the purchase of supplies, medical and laboratory equipment, essential for treating the pandemic in hospitals and health centers. Likewise, the cold chain will be expanded to store and distribute vaccines nationwide. Functionality will also be improved in immunization days, hospital waste management and wastewater treatment.

The loan was granted for a term of 30 years, has an execution period of until June 2025, has a grace period of five years and was financed by the International Development Association (IDA).
