The “truth” told by memes and social networks

The phenomenon of television, social networks or YouTube in the midst of trending topics does not fail to point, on the one hand, to the great wave of fake news that mocks from the top down principles of ethics, responsibility, journalistic or human seriousness in general, and on the other hand, the tide in which hundreds of Internet users jump into the water without a hint of critical judgment.

Decontextualized and manipulated images and videos show the power of a Photoshop or video editor to narrate a past event in a present that is far from what that audiovisual or written message is really communicating. Also the loss of prestige of television networks and the media that never tire of throwing lies and lies against the screen.

And then comes the trend of video posted in a chain in the states, the same video on WhatsApp or Instagram, without verifying its veracity; the image of a child with the same phrase without first checking is not any taken from Google; the publication on Facebook shared thousands of times supported only by the number of likes and comments.

The "truth" told by memes and social networks

Constructed stories, thrown into the network of networks, and that are foolishly taken by users who laugh at the joke and fall into the trap of sensationalism and the game of emotions. The contrast of sources is a point that was left aside, very few of them turn on the light bulb to open another medium, read the opinion of a specialist on that subject.

This is what is happening today with Ukraine in the center of the table when millions throw themselves into popular opinion and previously formulated judgments without even knowing the what or why of the phenomenon, its antecedents; very few dominate the chicken of the rice with chicken —as we say—, however, they adopt positions that go hand in hand with the fashionable voice.

Finally, we fall back into the suffocating coverage of the most dominant media, in a “single truth”, in the cunning manipulation that they achieve without the reader suspecting, questioning or smelling anything strange. Mass judgment is a phenomenon that increasingly affects a society stupefied by social networks and online memes.
