The super ship that will leave the port tonight with 12,800 cattle on board

A state-of-the-art ship, flying the Panamanian flag and belonging to a Saudi businessman, manufactured to transport cattle on foot over long distances, will depart around midnight this Tuesday from the port of Montevideo bound for the port of Weifangin China, moving 12,500 bellies and 300 bulls.

The commercial operation, coordinated by the Del Norte Agribusiness firm, considered the purchase of heifers and bulls from more than a hundred producers.

Juan Pablo Helguera, director of the company, highlighted The Observer that cattle suppliers are breeders from all over the country, the vast majority medium and small.

Genetics is from the Abeerden Angus breed. The heifers will be impregnated with Wagyu cattle to promote premium beef production. The bulls will be used for reproductive purposes.

The animals were acquired from January to March, at market prices, and then they complied with an adaptation and quarantine period prior to the trip based on the sanitary requirements of the market that acquired them and the Uruguayan Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP). .

Cattle comfort

The ship, with a Panamanian flag, is called Anna Marra and belongs to a company whose owner is a Saudi.

It has 20,000 square meters, “Therefore, the comfort for the animals is excellent, they are very comfortable, it is a first-line boat,” he said.“which complies with all the international standards of the most demanding markets, it is a ship that is authorized to operate in Australia and that says it all”, he added.

The cattle are permanently monitored by a team of four stockman, that is, people specially trained for health surveillance, to feed them, give them water and attend to any emergency.

In addition to the 12,800 animals, loaded during the last days, more than enough food was loaded on the ship for the transfer period: 3,500 tons of rations and 200 tons of bales.

Water was also loaded and there is a water treatment plant on the ship.

The ship will arrive at its destination within 38 days, it was reported.

China, a vacuum cleaner

China is the main destination for Uruguayan meat exports. So far in 2022, it is responsible for 58% of the almost US $ 2,000 million that have entered. Considering the volume, it captured 66% of placements of bovine meat and 47% of sheep meat. Added to this firmness in the demand for meat is the increasing demand for Uruguayan genetics to strengthen domestic livestock production.

The exported genetics are from the Angus breed.

The minister in the port

Helguera highlighted the value of a differential this Tuesday in operations at the port, the visit of leaders and officials of the MGAP, headed by Minister Fernando Mattos, and also of legislators who are members of the Livestock Commissions in Parliament.

The minister verified the conditions for a transfer with welfare for the animals.

“I understand that since the 1980s such an invitation has not been made, the idea was for them to get to know the ship, to see how the cargo is made, how the animals are treated and under what conditions they will make the trip,” he concluded.

On its Twitter social network account, the MGAP reported: “The #MGAP team was able to supervise the shipment on site and check the optimal conditions in which the animals traveled to the Asian country”.
