The area planted with white corn fell 9.1 percent in the spring-summer (SV) cycle, which at the end will have a 3.5 percent drop in production compared to the same previous period (2022), reported the Agri-Food Information Service and Fisheries (SIAP).
In contrast, the production of yellow grain, for livestock use, grew 6.9 percent in the same cycle, although imports last year were similar to those of 2021, almost 16.5 million tons.
Of the imports of yellow corn for 2023, the United States Department of Agriculture reports that China will be the largest demander (18 million tons), followed by Mexico (17 million 200 thousand) and Japan (15 million).
The average monthly purchase volume of yellow corn in 2022 was one million 381 thousand tons.

In relation to production, in the autumn-winter (OI) 2022 cycle, 62,465 hectares were planted, 19.3 percent less than in the previous OI cycle. The volume of the harvests was 356 thousand 92 tons, 14.2 percent more than in 2021. Tamaulipas is the largest producer of yellow corn in the OI cycle and in 2022 it contributed 69 percent of the total harvested.
As for PV 2022, until December 388,103 hectares had been harvested, 81 percent of the planted area, with a production of 2.6 million tons. By the end of the cycle, it is estimated to reach 3 million tons, 6.9 percent more than in the previous similar cycle.
On white corn, for human use, the SIAP specified that the planted area of the OI 2022 cycle was one million hectares, 100,000 less than those planted in the same cycle of 2021.
He specified that Sinaloa, Veracruz and Chiapas concentrated seven out of every 10 hectares planted in that cycle. The harvest concluded in September, with a production of 6.9 million tons, 10.1 percent less than in the similar cycle of 2021.
From the advance of the harvests of the PV 2022 cycle, as of December, 3.9 million hectares were raised with 11.8 million tons of white corn, so it is estimated that by the end of the cycle, production will be 16 million tons, 3.5 percent less. than what was achieved in 2021.
The average rural price of white corn in the country during December was 6,630 pesos per ton, a monthly increase of 3.3 percent and an annual increase of 20 percent.
