The pioneer area of Catalonia has the same path as 50 years ago

In the 70s, a few nature lovers decided to build their homes in an area that at that time was considered rural. You had to drive to mile 7-1/2 of the highway to the north and then turn right for a mile on a path lined with trees and mountain. Some villas were the only neighbors. the path was more than enough to support the coming and going of those few pioneer inhabitants. Thus began to urbanize the area of Catalonia.

Over time, the city of Santa Cruz expanded and completely enveloped Catalonia with new neighbourhoods, gated communities, construction companies and agricultural industries, bringing modernity and pavement to the confines of the northern part of the city. Everything changed except the former country path, which is still dirt. this way –also known as the entrance to Vallecito–, connects Cristo Redentor avenues with the Beni extension and then with G-77 avenue.

Residents of the Catalonia area complain that the road has become impassable: they point out that the intense light vehicular traffic and high-tonnage trucks cause wells that later turn into quagmires – not only with the waters of therain, but with those that drain from the new urbanizations paved and industries. There is also no shortage of “restrained” ones that throw rubble of all kinds in their pretended desire to fill in gaps. Suddenly, the peaceful path has become an insufferable odyssey.

The maintenance of the road has been almost nil, despite the request of the neighbors. In August 2017, for example, they sent a letter addressed to the Department of Planning of the Mayor’s Office of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in which they requested the paving of this road, given its importance in the already populated and developed northern area of the city. There was no response or any action from the authorities at the time.

Now, the residents of Catalonia hope that the deputy mayor of District 5, to which they belong, will take action on the matter, after Mayor Jhonny Fernández announced a changes in all the district sub-mayorships, so that those in charge better serve the neighbourhood’s requirements.
