The National Assembly dissolves the Red Cross of Nicaragua

The government of Daniel Ortega, through the National Assembly with an official majority, transferred the Nicaraguan Red Cross, which had an autonomous character, into the hands of the State on Wednesday, after accusing it of violating its principles “of impartiality and neutrality” by attending Injured protesters during the 2018 anti-government protests.

The National Assembly approved with a total of 91 votes in favor and 0 against, the request for the “repeal” of the decree that gave birth to the Nicaraguan Red Cross and authorized the organization “under a Christian, socialist and solidarity model”, which is the slogan of the Ortega administration.

“In the acts that occurred in 2018 that threatened the peace and stability of the nation, some affiliates of this association acted against its principles and the association transgressed the laws of the country,” indicates the documentation of the Assembly.

The humanitarian entity was also accused of failing to comply with its duties and obligations established in Law No. 1115, General Law for the Regulation and Control of Non-Profit Organizations (OSFL).

At the moment, the organization has not ruled on the matter.

At the hands of the Ministry of Health

The organization will now pass into the hands of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), which has been accused of having a partisan nature, in fact, in the anti-government protests, the entity was denounced for refusing to assist protesters.

Ana Quiroz, an expert on education issues, assured the voice of america that the cancellation – which comes 5 years after the protests against Ortega – “seems like a passing of accounts” by the ruling party that, in his opinion, “seeks eagerly to control everything.”

The Ortega government has canceled at least 3,000 NGOs from 2018 to date and has ordered the confiscation of their assets.
