The missing taxi driver in Camagüey is found lifeless

MIAMI, United States. – The lifeless body of the Camagüey taxi driver Guperto Rafael Cánovas Adán, reported missing last Friday, was found this Wednesday, according to reported on social media the Cuban activist Yamilka Lafita, known as Lara Crofs, and other people close to the case.

“From the first moment I felt a lot of empathy for this case, the only thing I thought was that God help him, that after having survived so many years in this Cuba and still working, fate could not give him such a sad ending,” Lafita wrote in your Facebook profile.

The activist also lamented the current wave of violence on the island. “Every day there is news of murdered Cubans, in the vast majority the motive is to strip them of valuables,” she lamented. “Today the people of Camagüey mourn another victim of this wave of violence that has no end,” she added.

Cánovas Adán was hired last Friday by two young men and a woman to take a trip, he assured CyberCuba a person close to the victim who did not want to be identified.

It is assumed that the starting point of the trip was the Camagüey Bus Terminal, but the destination is unknown. That same day, when the victim’s family tried to establish telephone communication, they found that the telephone was “off or out of coverage area.”

Later, the relatives of Adán Cánovas filed a complaint with the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), which did not find the whereabouts of the victim until at least this Wednesday.

The news, which has shaken Cuban public opinion, adds to another murder that also occurred in the province of Camagüey in the last week. It is about the femicide of the 17-year-old teenager Leidy Bacallao, happened on February 4 at the hands of her ex-partner and at the Camalote Popular Council police station, in the municipality of Nuevitas.

In the same province, Yudel López Álvarez was also killed, who was reported missing on February 1 and later found lifeless.

The man, the father of two teenagers, was murdered to steal his cell phone and the rickshaw with which he worked. Liuty Álvarez, a relative of the victim, wrote on his Facebook profile: “He was found dead in Camagüey by two scum, two rotten souls without a heart, without feelings, without knowing that they were leaving a destroyed family.”

“They stabbed him until he was defenseless, until they took him to a house and there they finished him off in the most inhuman way that exists. They put his body in a sack with a stone and threw it into the river. Everything was discovered because the murderers were selling the tricycle in Vertientes and they were caught”, said the journalist from Camagüey, José Luis Tan, who contacted a source close to the victim.

Denunciations on social networks of assaults in the middle of a public thoroughfare, theft of cell phones, bags and backpacks are becoming more frequent; as well as gender-based murders or to rob the victims. Despite this, the Cuban authorities are silent on the matter and hide the official figures on the violence.
