“The measure will enter into force tomorrow”: lawyer warns Cubans about restrictions on the border

“La medida entrará en vigor mañana”: abogado advierte a cubanos sobre restricciones en la frontera

MIAMI, United States. — Attorney Jesús Novo, from the Gallardo Law Firm, explained to CubaNet some of the particularities that the new immigration program announced today by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, will have and that will directly affect the cuban migrants who try to reach the northern country by border.

As Biden administration officials have announced, the lawyer specified that it is a plan similar to the one that has been applied for months with Venezuelan migrants seeking to enter US territory.

Although Novo maintained that the measure “goes against the international rights of people who need to request asylum when they are fleeing a country where they are suffering persecution,” he recommended that Cubans take into account the new administration measures before launching towards the border.

“I feel sorry for the people who are traveling. I know that many people have incurred tremendous expenses, they have sold their properties to make this journey, but unfortunately, if they are going to arrive tomorrow, they will already encounter this problem,” the lawyer told this newspaper.

In this sense, Novo recommended that Cubans not try to enter through the border, but rather look for someone to sponsor them so that, then, they can enter in an orderly manner under this new regulation.

The US government specified this Thursday in a release that the measure seeks to stop the migratory wave that the country is facing, but, at the same time, creating a new procedure is “orderly, safe and humane” that “will substantially reduce” the number of people trying to access US territory illegally .

“Don’t show up at the border. Stay where you are and apply (for access) legally. (…) If your application is approved, you will be able to enter. If it is denied or you try to cross into the United States illegally, you will not be allowed access,” President Biden said from the White House.
