The great cuban actor Mario Balmaseda, an essential figure in theater, film and television on the island, died in Havana this Saturday. He was 81 years old.

“The great Cuban actor Mario Balmaseda has died, who was Lenin, Maceo, Eduardo, Manolo, Reinier and many other essential characters to understand what we are,” Alpidio Alonso, Cuba’s minister of culture, wrote on Twitter when reporting on the death of the artist.

Balmaseda (Havana, 1941-2022) had a brilliant artistic career spanning more than 50 years, from his first steps at the Martí Theater with the famous Santos y Artigas circus, where his mother worked as a reciter.

It was in the 1960s, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, that he joined the world of theater, in which he developed a notable career and stood out not only as an actor, but also as a director. For this recognized performance he deserved the National Theater Award in 2006.

Outside the stage, Balmaseda also shone on Cuban television and cinema, media that also recognized him with their National Award, in 2019 and in 2021 respectively.
