He Government has made official the appointment of María Julia Cordero as administrator of the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC), consolidating her role as the highest authority of the body in charge of regulating civil aviation activities in Argentina.
This decision of Governmentformalized through Decree 14/2025 published in the Official Gazette, marks the end of her intervention as auditor and the beginning of a new stage in the management of the ANAC. María Julia Cordero took over as ANAC auditor on July 12, 2024, within the framework of an intervention made official by Decree 606/2024.
This intervention, initially stipulated for 180 days, was part of a restructuring process promoted by the Government due to a series of deficiencies that generated potential risks for civil aviation and threatened Category 1 of the national aeronautical system, the highest rating granted by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
During his intervention, Cordero carried out a series of key actions to reorganize and optimize the operation of the ANAC. These measures included the evaluation of the structure and financial status of the organization, the adoption of Latin American Aeronautical Regulations, and the implementation of a system of delegated aviation authority in the country..
In addition, the extension of the retirement age limit for pilots was highlighted, following international trends in aeronautical regulations. One of the most significant achievements of Cordero’s intervention was the extension of Category 1 operational safety, resolving the issues raised by the FAA in record time.
This status is crucial to preserve the competitiveness of the Argentine airline sector, especially in a context of market opening and the arrival of new operators. The intervention also included the reduction of almost 100 personnel contracts and the readjustment of their areas, eliminating 40% of the hierarchical positions and eliminating 10 directorates and 32 departments.
Designation
The appointment of Cordero as administrator of the ANAC comes at a key moment for the Governmentjust a week before the arrival of a mission from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which will audit the ANAC within the framework of its Universal Operational Safety Audit Program (USOAP).
This audit will evaluate the changes implemented after a critical diagnosis carried out before the intervention, in which serious operational and administrative deficiencies were identified, as well as alleged illegal acts that compromised the safety of civil aviation.
