The future proposed by President Petro for Ecopetrol

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, assured this Wednesday that the future in the coming decades of the state oil company ecopetrol it is in “clean energy”, which it considers to be “cheap” and does not affect the environment.

(What happened in the meeting between Petro and the president of Ecopetrol?).

“We visited the Ecopetrol facilities, looking at the efforts that they have made, which are still small and marginal in relation to clean energy, which is where I believe that Ecopetrol could have a future in the coming decades in Colombia”expressed the president in a visit to the solar farm of San Fernando, of that company.

In that complex, located in the department of Meta (center), Petro pointed out that the country’s energy portfolio should be diversified and the production of renewable energy increased.

This said, “because it is a way to produce cheap energy without affecting the environment”.

“Look at how it is linked —sometimes it is difficult to find the connecting paths between the flood and clean energy— but it turns out that the climate crisis is precisely the exclusive product of using fossil fuels, because of the greenhouse gases that warm the planet and are getting worse over time, changing weather patterns,” assured.

During the last presidential campaign, Petro stressed that he wants to spend “from an extractivist economy to a productive economy”, as well as stop new oil exploration in the country as part of the transition to clean energy.

The fear that measures in this sense will affect Ecopetrol caused sharp falls of the oil company’s shares in the days after Petro’s election, although they later began to recover.

In his victory speech, Petro also proposed that the countries of Latin America unite to talk with the United States and lay the foundations for a “energy transition” in the face of the ravages caused by climate change.
