A first shipment of 2,353 units of saplings, from Canada, left the Port of Manzanillo in the province of Colón, inspected by the Agricultural Quarantine unit of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA).
Kirian Cerceño, head of MIDA’s Agricultural Quarantine, stated that these Christmas trees are going to the national market and that they have gone through an inspection process, complying with all the regulations established by the Ministry of Agricultural Development for the protection of heritage.
He pointed out that these little trees are free of insects, weeds and soil and have complied with the requirements established by the National Directorate of Plant Health.
These Christmas trees come from Canada and go directly to the national market.
Cerceño indicated that these companies that send us these little trees are part of the controls of the Ministry of Agriculture of origin, which are the ones that do not give the guarantee that the fulfillment of the requirements was given in order.
He stated that as soon as the containers arrive in the national territory, the inspection process begins based on a sampling that is carried out in coordination with the regulations on how the sampling of containers should be carried out.
The staff of the Agricultural Quarantine Unit in Colón carried out this meticulous inspection of these containers, which have come out in good condition.
Some 47 containers full of saplings from Canada and the United States are expected to arrive in the national territory next week, according to the national executive director of MIDA’s Agricultural Quarantine.
