The Executive sent to the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union the appointment of Alejandro Bichir Batres as ambassador of Mexico in Panama, replacing the activist and senator Jesusa Rodríguez, who declined the invitation to hold that position.

In the document sent by the Ministry of the Interior, it was requested to cancel the legislative process corresponding to the diplomatic appointment in favor of Laura María de Jesús Rodríguez Ramírez and to return the documentation that was sent for this purpose.

The appointment of Bichir Batres was transferred to the second working commission of the Permanent, which must prepare the opinion for its ratification or rejection.

Rodríguez Ramírez, better known as Jesusa Rodríguez, was appointed ambassador to Panama in August 2022, after the decline in February of the historian Pedro Salmerón, who was accused of sexually harassing his students when he was a professor at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico.

The accusations against the academic caused the Panamanian Foreign Ministry to ask Mexico not to request approval for Salmerón, proposed as ambassador in January of last year. In February, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at a press conference that he would appoint the activist in her place, but formalized his proposal six months later.

Alejandro Bichir is an actor and film and theater director. He is the father of fellow actors Odysseus, Demián and Bruno.
