The Constitutional Commission of the Senate sought to advance the election of constitutional councilors in a week and set a plebiscite for the departure of December 17, 2023

In the prelude to the long day of voting that he will face, the Senate Constitution Commission approved the modification of the electoral itinerary of the new constituent process. Thus, the senators endorsed the advancement of the election of the Constitutional Council for May 7.

The reform in question initially proposed May 14 of next year for the election of the members of the Constitutional Council. However, since that day is Mother’s Day, the instance sought the method to reschedule it.

Likewise, they considered delaying the elections for a week, but May 21 marks the Day of Naval Glories, so the option of bringing them forward to May 7 was finally approved unanimously by the commission.

During the day last Tuesday, the Electoral Service (Servel) warned about the estimated date, since the body must close the electoral registry 120 days before the elections, so the reform should be published in the Official Gazette no later than January 7, that is, next week.

Given this, the senators approved in the same way an indication that gives more time to the Servel, reducing that period from 120 to 100 days. Thus, the project must be dispatched from Congress before January 27, 2023.

In this way, the electoral schedule was as follows: the constitutional exit plebiscite will be held on December 17 of next year. The commission updated the amendments entered to the reform from 140 to 189, so it will meet until 8:00 p.m. at the headquarters of Congress in Santiago.
