MIAMI, United States. — The chicken corresponding to the basic food basket for the month of May is being unloaded in Havana, official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso reported this Monday.
“In the port of Havana, the chicken of the basic basket corresponding to the month of May. After unloading in the capital, the ship will travel this Tuesday to Santiago de Cuba to begin unloading at the eastern dock on Thursday,” Alonso said in social networks.
In a report for him caribbean channelthe journalist indicated that the ship was carrying 4,500 tons of chicken that “will be transferred as quickly as possible to the country’s butcher shops.
Unlike what has happened on previous occasions with tankers and ships that arrive on the island to deliver fuel and other products, on this occasion the reporter did not identify the origin of the ship that unloaded in the Havana port.
The authorities of the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN) assured the caribbean channel that in May the entire population will receive chicken from the regulated family basket, which in April was only delivered to children under 13 years of age.
Chicken exports from the United States to Cuba registered their lowest level in the last six months in March 2023, according to figures published by the Department of Agriculture of the northern country.
The Cuban economist Pedro Monreal recently indicated on Twitter that the decrease in purchase volume occurred despite the fall in the price of the product in the US market.
The expert pointed out as a probable cause the shortage of foreign currency of the Cuban regime to meet the needs of the country.
Monreal recalled that “the United States is by a wide margin, the largest supplier of chicken meat to Cuba” and that the Caribbean country counts as four other minor exporters, of which only Brazil maintained its regular shipments, although in lower volume than in months previous.
