The Brazilian Arthur Melo, from Turin to Anfield

The young Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, number 4 in the world ranking, beat Argentina’s Federico Coria this Thursday in straight sets and advanced to the third round of the US Open.

Alcaraz delivered a relentless performance against Coria, number 78 in the ATP, to beat him 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 in the immense central stadium of Flushing Meadows, the Arthur Ashe.

The 19-year-old Spaniard displayed his usual offensive game, with 41 winning shots, against a Coria who was shipwrecked with his service without achieving a single ace, although from the baseline he put up a fight and at times played equal to equal to your opponent.

Alcaraz, who already beat another Argentine -Sebastián Baez- in his debut, added his 46th victory of the year. Only the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, already eliminated in New York, has reached that number of games won in 2022.

“It’s been a great year for me, but it’s not over yet,” stressed Alcaraz, who this season won his first two Masters 1000 titles (Miami and Madrid). “I have to look forward, continue to be the same person, the same player and go for it.”

In New York, Alcaraz has the opportunity not only to lift his first Grand Slam title but to become the youngest world number 1 in history.

His rival for the pass to the round of 16 will be another of the great promises of the circuit, the American Jenson Brooksby, who eliminated the Croatian Borna Coric, champion of the last Cincinnati Masters 1000.
