Rodríguez Zapatero’s last visit to Venezuela took place in October 2022, a month before Chavismo and the opposition sat down again in Mexico after a year-long pause in talks.
The president Nicolás Maduro received the former Spanish president, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, on Thursday night, in a visit that was barely reviewed by the state media.
Accompanied by First Lady Cilia Flores, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and the President of the National Assembly elected in 2020, Jorge Rodríguez, the Chavista leadership reported on Rodríguez Zapatero’s visit in a brief message broadcast on VTV.
No spokesperson explained the reasons for the visit of the former Spanish president who in the last decade has dedicated himself to mediation and political advice, being a recurring figure in the dialogue processes between Chavismo and the opposition.
The meeting between Maduro and Rodríguez Zapatero coincides with an interlude in the dialogue between Venezuelan political factions through the negotiating table set up in Mexico, pending compliance with the social agreements signed by both sides in November of last year.
Barely two days ago, Jorge Rodríguez —present at the meeting with Rodríguez Zapatero— once again threatened to abandon dialogue in Mexico If the signed agreements were not complied with, it denounces that the $3.2 billion of Venezuelan funds frozen abroad to finance those agreed social programs have not been released.
“If the return to the people of the $3.2 billion is not fulfilled, there is no reason to continue the dialogue” to later reiterate that those assets were “kidnapped” by the opposition.
The last visit of the Spanish politician took place in October 2022, a month before Chavismo and the opposition sat down again in Mexico after a year of pause in talks.
From Spain, rumors and accusations of Rodríguez Zapatero arise for his link with Chavismo and other leftist leaders in Latin America. According to the Spanish media the Moncloathe former Spanish president would secretly finance an opposition candidate with the intention of helping to legitimize the presidential elections that will take place in 2024, despite not citing any source or evidence to support this claim.
