The country’s vice president, Rachel Peña, He said on Tuesday that President Luis Abinader and the Dominican Government defend democracy in the Dominican Republic and the rest of the world. And he considered it a compliment if a country does not want to continue diplomatic relations because of this democratic thought.
This is what the official explained when speaking to journalists this morning about the temporary cessation of diplomatic relations between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, a measure taken by that South American country.
“These are decisions that are up to President Maduro (Venezuela), and we do not interfere in his decisions and the line of the country and of our President Luis Abinader is that we defend democracy,” he said.
He added: “And if there are countries that do not want to continue relations with us because they do not agree with our democratic thinking, then for us it is even a compliment. Because we will always defend democracy no matter what the cost. Here in our country and in the rest of the world.”
He stressed that President Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez are in charge of guaranteeing the safety of diplomatic personnel in Venezuela and bringing them to the Dominican Republic as soon as possible and when possible.
He also said that they will bring former President Leonel Fernandez. “He is an important person and he is doing everything possible to ensure that they return to the country safely,” he said.
