The agreements with the governors of Mexico
Abbott signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday with the governor of Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos Galván, and with the governor of Coahuila, Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís; while on Wednesday he signed a similar document together with the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda.

One day before signing the agreement with Tamaulipas, Governor Abbott threatened to reinstate these measures if the measures were not taken. “We hope and demand that the Mexican side finally step up and stop (migrant) crossings” through shallow waters and in other ways that allow these illegal migrants to cross the border, “he said in an interview with Fox News.
The government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had already expressed its rejection of the inspections on Tuesday, considering that they harm the flow of trade between the two countries.
The government of US President Joe Biden, from the Democratic Party, had also criticized the Republican governor this week for the inspections and assured that they were causing “significant interruptions” in the food and automobile supply chains.
Texas and Mexico are important trading partners and, in 2020 alone, they exchanged goods and services valued at 177.8 billion dollars, of which approximately 89 billion were exports from Mexico to the US and 88.7 billion were imports from the US, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).
