Tense discussion of the Naín-Retamal Law in the Senate Security Commission: Provost denounces legislative haste and censorship

A tense moment was experienced this Saturday morning in the Senate Security Commission, where the discussion in particular of the Naín-Retamal bill took place, after its approval in the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies. In detail, it was Senator Yasna Provoste (DC) who regretted the decision of the legislative body, in order not to receive all the guests in the framework of the processing of said project. “It is incomprehensible that the Security Commission refuses to listen to experts, magistrates or the Public Ministry itself,” she said.

And it is that, minutes before the session adjourned, Provoste confronted the president of the instance, Felipe Kast (Evópoli), after the latter said “I do not want us to continue giving the floor to everyone or if not, no we are never going to end”, at the request for a hearing by Senator DC. Faced with which, the parliamentarian responded by assuring that “a good law is made by listening.”

And after the session, the legislator specified that “The legislative haste in the Security Commission is a bad precedent, for the same reason, I regret the censorship to receive all the guests, especially the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the Organization of United Nations (UN). I believe that good laws are made by listening to all sectors”.

In this regard, the senator and former presidential candidate of the Christian Democrats explained that “we are very close to obtaining the legislation we need and for this reason we must be able to complete the job seriously, as we are used to doing in the Senate.” . Likewise, she criticized those who “are dazzled by circumstantial majorities and lose sight of the seriousness of the work and the need to put the interest of the country before any other interest.”

Finally, Yasna Provoste insisted that “to do it well, you don’t need to go faster”, detailing that being responsible in this process implies making sure that it does not go unnoticed that even the principle of the Rule of Law and individual guarantees of their own may not go unnoticed. of a democratic regime. “If the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies spent a year reviewing this matter, we could well give ourselves a couple of weeks to thoroughly review what is proposed to us. Being responsible also implies understanding that the fight against crime has different dimensions. We changed the legislation, but it is necessary to improve police management, provide the State with better accountability for its action in this matter. We must act on several fronts and not just one,” said the senator.
