Teams win eight medals and qualify for games in Salvador 2023

SANTO DOMINGO. The national wrestling teams won eight medals, including one gold, two silver and five bronze, in the Championship held at the Parque del Este Handball Pavilion, qualifying for the Central American and Caribbean Games El Salvador 2023.

In the tournament, which brought together competitors from 14 countries, the Dominican Republic obtained 17 of 18 possible places for the multi-sport event in El Salvador.

The Greek style and free women’s teams qualified completely (six places), while the men’s free modality obtained five.

Cuba exhibited great dominance in the qualifying by winning 17 gold medals and one silver for a total of 18 places.

Julio Rafael Rodríguez Romero won the first place metal in -74 kilos freestyle by defeating Franklin Gómez Matos, from Puerto Rico, in the final, while Luis Miguel Pérez Sosa won the bronze in -97 kilos by taking the victory against Venezuelan Cristian José Sarco Colmenarez,

The quisqueyanas María González, -53 kilos; Yocleidy Ramírez Santana, -57 kilograms, and Emeli Bautista Corcino, at -76 kilograms, each won a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle.

In the Greek style, in the 60 kilos, Yerony Liria Carreras took silver after losing 0-4 against Cuban Kevin De Armas Rodríguez, while Carlos Adames Palmer, in the 77 kilos, won bronze by beating 8- 0 to Luis Rivera Santiago, from Puerto Rico.

The other silver medal was won by Leo Dalis Santana Heredia, who fell 0-10 against the Cuban Keldis Josef Roche, at -130 kilos. The bronze was shared by Gino Ávila Dilbert, from Honduras, and Paul Baltazar Morales.

Luis Alfredo de León finished in fifth place after losing 1-7 to Jair Alexis Cuero Muñoz, from Colombia, in the dispute for the bronze of the 77 kilos test. Johan Batista, in less than 87 kilos, and Enyer Manuel Feliciano each occupied fifth places.

The wrestling qualifier had the support of Seaboard Energía Limpia, RH Mejía, OMSA, Gatorade, Vitasalud, Creso, the Ministry of Sports, the Dominican Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Tourism, Fedojudo and Handball.

Athletes from Panama, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico, Barbados and the Dominican Republic took part in the tournament.
