"Let me tell my son that I love him": Suyen Barahona's request to the dictatorship

Suyen Barahona saw her son in photos: “He is my source of inspiration”

The political prisoner and president of the Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos), Suyen Barahona, was able to see her five-year-old son only in photographs after more than 540 days without being able to meet the little one, confirmed to Article 66 César Dubois, husband of the opponent. Dubois and Barahona’s offspring are out of Nicaragua as a result of the woman’s arrest.

“Our son and I are outside Nicaragua, Suyen (Barahona) could not see him in person, but they allowed our relatives to show Suyen some photos of our son. After more than 500 days, she was finally able to see her son in photos, “revealed Dubois.

Her relatives are promoting a campaign called #UnaLlamadaParaSuyen with the aim of making the situation visible and putting pressure on the national authorities to authorize some type of contact between mother and child.

«Our request that they allow us a call, which is part of the rights of the child and of Suyen (Barahona) as well, is maintained. We hope that they allow that call, the same for the other relatives who have their children outside of Nicaragua,” said Suyen Barahona’s husband.

“We are happy because at least our relatives were able to see Suyen Barahona,” he added. This December 7 and 8, other prisoners and political prisoners were able to see their sons and daughters for four hours at the facilities of the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ) after 17 months without being able to communicate with them.

The political prisoner sent a message to the citizens who have demanded her release and expressed that: “We are very grateful for all the prayers for the prompt release of all the political prisoners.” “He said that his son is his source of inspiration in the most difficult moments and gives him strength to carry on,” Dubois told this media outlet.

During these 17 months, the authorities of “El Nuevo Chipote” have prevented the child’s letters and drawings from being delivered to his mother, despite the fact that the lawyer for the area of conscience has filed appeals before the Court of Appeals of Managua and none has been answered. Suyen Barahona was violently captured on June 13, 2021.
