Suyen Barahona is on her birthday, locked up in “El Chipote”

The opposition and current political prisoner Suyen Barahona She is celebrating another year of life, but this year she will have to spend it locked up in the cells of the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ), known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua.

“Today is the birthday of our beloved president Suyen Barahona Cuan. Solidarity, brave and committed woman”, recalled the Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos) through a Twitter account.

The opposition group affirms that they celebrate the life of the hostage of conscience and embrace her «sure that you will soon be free. Freedom for the more than 182 political prisoners!”

For his part, Héctor Mairena, national director of Unamos, told Article 66 that on this special day for Barahona “it should be noted that she is a young leader and very committed to social justice and democracy in Nicaragua.”

“Suyen has had exemplary behavior like all political prisoners, making the prison the first trench of civic resistance and denunciation of the Ortega Murillo regime,” he added.

Regarding the situation experienced by women political prisoners, Mairena said that the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega has been cruel to all opponents. «Suyen Barahona is isolated, like Violeta Granera, Tamara Dávila and Ana Margarita Vijil. All of them have not committed any crime, other than fighting for a free Nicaragua », she indicated.

“We demand not only their total and unconditional release, but the annulment of all those trials that are spurious, because they are made on the basis of illegitimate laws,” he concluded.

Sentenced to eight years in prison

On February 15, the Ortega judge Ulisa Yaoska Tapia Silvahead of the Thirteenth Criminal Court of Managua, sentenced the president of Unamos to eight years in prison for the crime of “undermining national integrity”, and also disqualified her from holding public office.

During the impeachment trial, Barahona briefly and firmly stated that “I have dedicated a large part of my adult life to to improve Nicaragua and defend human rights of all Nicaraguans. Part of my fight has been for my son so that he knows that his rights must be defended », detailed the story released by the family of the political prisoner after the guilty verdict.

The activist was one of the most representative faces within the opposition denouncing human rights violations by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. Although there is already a sentence, the regime does not define whether she will serve the sentence in “El Chipote” or she will be transferred to a women’s prison.
