Sutel: “they left Antel with open veins”

The Single Telecommunications Union (Sutel) convened an urgent press conference in order to express, by the union and all the workers, the “deep rejection in all its terms of the decision to break with Antel’s monopoly » through a decree that authorizes cable companies Nuevo Siglo, TCC, Monte Cable, Praimar and Korfield to sell Internet service.

From SUTEL they describe this decision as “dangerous” and consider that it is part of a process promoted by this administration through which it seeks to “dismantle” the public company “attacking” the monopoly that until now belonged to Antel.

“This violates the popular will that Antel as a public company support fixed telecommunications,” said the union activist and member of the Union, Florencia Leymonié.

«It has to be recorded in the retinas of every Uruguayan, who opened Antel’s veins. He began to bleed as we have been denouncing for a long time that he was going to happen », expressed the vice president, Martín Soffía.

At the conference they warned that this Presidency resolution “generates such a serious precedent” that it will enable multinationals to also compete with our public company in a service that generates revenue for Antel in the order of 400 million dollars a year and “compromises universal access of telecommunications”.

“Not only are these companies going to compete with Antel, but they are going to do it using its infrastructure. Because that’s what the 3 decrees signed by the Executive Branch say,” Leymonié highlighted.

Privatizing model that attacks sovereignty

The workers stated that these measures, in line with a “neoliberal and privatizing model,” do nothing more than “deliver” the assets of Uruguayans to a few families. In addition, it “assaults the sovereignty” of our country.

Sutel reported that they are in permanent session analyzing the steps to be taken to prevent the continuation of these “destructive policies” promoted by this government administration.

“We understand that it is a leap to sovereignty and the checkmate for the dismantling of the company. Today what remains is to go out and defend our companies that we put so much work into. With those words they encouraged the participation of the unemployment of public companies to be held on June 22.
