Supreme Court defines quina for vacancy left by ex-minister Guillermo Silva

The Plenary of the Supreme Court heard this Thursday the presentations of the candidates for minister of the highest court, in the vacancy left by Guillermo Silva Gundelach, who left office on November 8, 2022 upon turning 75, the age limit to perform that function. During the day, the Plenary voted for the applicants and defined a team, which the President must review gabriel boric.

The quina was made up of the following candidates: Juan Manuel Munoz Pardo (included in its own right), Jessica Gonzalez Troncoso (14 votes), Marcia Undurraga Jensen (11 votes), Roberto Contreras Olivares (nine votes) and Omar Astudillo Contreras (Six votes. He tied with the minister Maria Catepillan Lobos and got his place by lottery).

The Supreme Court referred the quina to the Ministry of Justice. Subsequently, President Gabriel Boric must choose a candidate. Then, the Senate will have to ratify that appointment.

The members of the quina

Juan Manuel Muñoz Pardo has been a minister of the Santiago Appeals Court since 2001. He studied Law at the University of Chile. In 1985, he took office as the regular judge of the 8th Criminal Court of Santiago. Between 1999 and 2000 he served as minister of the Copiapó Court of Appeals.

Jéssica González Troncoso has been a minister of the Santiago Appeals Court since 2018. She has been a judge of the 12th Civil Court of Santiago and rapporteur of the Supreme Court.

Marcia Undurraga Jensen has been a minister of the Valdivia Court of Appeals since 2016. Between 1989 and 1998 she served as rapporteur of the Valdivia Court of Appeals. She also served as president of the Rancagua Court of Appeals.

Roberto Contreras Olivares has been a minister of the San Miguel Court of Appeals since 2002. In 1994 he became a judge of the Third Criminal Court of Valparaíso. In 1998 he was appointed as the chief relator of the Supreme Court.

Lastly, Omar Astudillo Contreras has been a minister of the Santiago Appeals Court since 2016. In 1999 he became a judge of the 25th Civil Court of Santiago and in 2002 as rapporteur of the Supreme Court.
