Argentina will support, tomorrow, before the United Nations General Assembly (UN) an emergency resolution promoted by the United States Government that seeks the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council of the body for war crimes committed in the city of Bucha, Ukraine.
This petition, which was introduced last month by President Joe Biden, will be put to a vote tomorrow (Thursday, April 7) during the plenary of the UN General Assembly, to be developed in the city of New York; and will require the support of at least two thirds of the members of the organism to be approved
In statements to the press, the head of the White House assured that “there will be no major inconveniences when approving the resolution”, because, according to what he affirms, “Most of the states that make up the UN they are against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and condemn the massacre of civilians in Bucha”.
However, he acknowledged that Possibly, “the initiative does not have the unanimous support of the Governments”, given that Moscow has several historical allied countries, such as Belarus, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. In addition, China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are expected to abstain from voting.
Argentina supports the resolution, but does not change its position before the invasion
This afternoon, President Alberto Fernández met with Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero and the Argentine ambassador in Washington, Jorge Arguello, to evaluate the request for suspension presented by the United States and define the diplomatic line that the Argentine State must follow tomorrow in the vote of world body.
At the meeting, Cafiero and Arguello presented their arguments before the head of government and reviewed the evidence presented by the US and Ukraine regarding the Bucha massacre, for which they concluded to support Russia’s suspension from the Human Rights Council. H H.
This was announced today by the Argentine foreign minister in statements quoted by the newspaper El Destape. “By instruction of President Alberto Fernández, tomorrow Argentina will vote in favor of suspending Russia from the DD Council. H H. of the UN”.
However, the foreign minister clarified, This decision does not change the position of the Argentine State regarding the military conflict in Ukraine. “This is a specific issue of Human Rights and Argentina cannot go against them,” she added.
Let us remember that since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Argentine government has handled the issue of the escalation of war on Ukrainian soil with great discretion and has limited itself, on several occasions, to giving an opinion on this subject. Even during the extraordinary session of the G20, Argentina abstained from voting in favor of the request to expel Russia from the multilateral organization.
The massacre of civilians in the city of Bucha has been strongly condemned by the leaders of the world’s major powers. Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and the United States have blamed the Kremlin for the murder of dozens of people and accuse the country of committing war crimes.
