Cuban migrants dragged by the current of the Rio Grande rescued in Mexico

MIAMI, United States. — A group of Cuban migrants was rescued yesterday by agents of the National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM) when they were dragged by the current of the Rio Grande, that agency reported in a release.

The rescue operation took place in the state of Coahuila and was carried out by the Grupo Beta Piedras Negras, a force subordinate to the INM.

Among the Cubans were a child, two women and a man, who were being swept away by the current in a deep area of the Rio Grande, in the vicinity of International Bridge II.

The INM note indicates that “the force of the water separated the four foreign migrants from a group of 12 who, holding hands, tried to cross into the United States.”

The images of the event were transmitted via Facebook Live down the channel Impact Vision News.

While US Border Patrol agents, with the support of an airboat, intercepted the eight of the Cuban migrants who remained in the river, elements of Grupo Beta Piedras Negras evacuated the two women, the man and the child, who were brought to safety in Mexican territory.

The reporter from Impact Vision News who covered the event collected the testimony of some of the rescued migrants, who assured that they had left the island for Nicaragua and that, since then, they had carried out a journey of about 16 days.

After the rescue operation, and in coordination with elements of the Coahuila Civil Police and the physical Municipal Liaison, the migrants were temporarily transferred to a shelter, where they received care from medical personnel.

In recent months, several Cuban migrants have lost their lives in the Rio Grande trying to reach the United States. On March 17, a Cuban father identified as José Luis González drowned while trying to cross into the US through the Mexican town of Piedras Negras.

Also in March, the death of the young Atkinson Waterman Torrens, a native of the province of Villa Clara, was revealed.
