Spanish carriers temporarily suspend strike

The Platform for the Defense of the Road Transport Sector agreed to temporarily suspend the strike that these autonomous carriers began on March 14, and that it will resume at the time they deem appropriate.

“We have to organize ourselves even more in the provinces and prepare ourselves so that, in a short period of time, we can act again with more force,” says Manuel Hernández, spokesman for the truck drivers on strike.

It is not an end point, but a “temporary suspension”, as it has been described by this entity, a minority within the union and with special implementation among autonomous carriers.

These freight transport professionals had decided to stop indefinitely due to high diesel prices, and also demanded improvements in working conditions.

The Platform for the Defense of the Road Transport Sector was the only one that continued with the protest by not accepting the measures agreed by the Government with the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC).

The organization demanded to negotiate these issues directly with the Government, as it did not feel represented by the CNTC, which at the end of March obtained a bonus of 20 cents per liter of fuel until June 30.

The dissolution of the protests comes on the same day that the discount of 20 cents per liter of gasoline for all drivers comes into force, one of the measures that the Government agreed with all legally recognized organizations, within a package of 1,000 million euros in aid for the sector.

The strike had subsided considerably in recent days, after paralyzing distribution in some sectors and causing shortages of milk, fish and other foods, as well as articles and components necessary for the manufacture of certain products.
