The MatamoroSon festival, which pays homage to the they are cuban and its most notable cultists, takes place until next Tuesday in Santiago de Cuba.
After several years of absence, the musical event returned to the city of Santiago, with the presence of artists and sonera groups of recognized trajectory inside and outside the country.
In the considered cradle of the son, a genre declared Cultural Heritage of Cuba, the event recalls the legacy of Miguel Matamoros, an iconic figure of traditional Cuban music, as well as the maestro adalberto alvarezwho died in 2021 as a result of COVID-19 and tireless promoter of son and festival.
In addition, during its conferences, Ignacio Piñeiro, Pacho Alonso, Miguelito Cuní and Eduardo “Tiburón” Morales, among other greats, will be honored.
Under the leadership of composer Rodulfo Vaillant, president of the Uneac In Santiago, the event will celebrate this Monday, May 8, the Day of the Cuban Son, when a tribute will be paid in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery to Matamoros and to the also notable musicians from Santiago Francisco Repilado (Compay Segundo) and Electo Rosell (Chepín), as reported rebel youth.
Groups of the quality of the Santiaguero Septet, Ecos del Tivolí, La Familia Valera Miranda, and the Chepín Chovén and Los Karachi orchestras, will be protagonists of the festival together with other groups and sonera pickets in various stages of the city, among them the legendary Casa de the Trova of Santiago.
Concerts, record presentations —among them the most recent album of the Septeto Santiaguero, titled And I keep going— and theoretical sessions are part of the MatamoroSon program, which reserves a tres player competition for its closing day.
The closing ceremony, on Tuesday night, reserves a great sound discharge in Carretera del Morro and Calle 3, a space known as the thermometer of popular dance music in Cuba.
