The accident occurred in a public park in that city just as the mayor, local officials, journalists and other guests were making an inaugural tour of remodeling works in a tourist area.
Local media videos show the precise moment that the group is crossing the suspension bridge, several meters high, which suddenly collapses.
Some people fall violently onto the deck of the collapsed bridge, while others slip and fall into the water and between the large rocks of a river passing below.
“There are around 25 people who were injured (…), only two required hospitalization for serious injuries,” Samuel Sotelo, secretary of government for the state of Morelos, a neighbor of the Mexican capital, told Milenio television.
The official confirmed that the injured included the mayor and his wife, who were not seriously injured.
“Surely [el puente] it did not support the weight of the people”, added Sotelo who explained that the opinions will be initiated to determine what caused the collapse.
The state governor of Morelos, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, lamented the accident and offered his support to the municipal authorities, in a message on his Twitter account.
The city of Cuernavaca, about 85 km from Mexico City, is a popular vacation destination for capital residents who flock throughout the year due to its sunny climate and numerous country houses and clubs.
