The president of the Factory Development Society (Sofofa), Richard von Appen, asked the government to have greater border control regarding immigration. This, in the context of the increase in crime in the north of the country, especially in Arica.
Von Appen highlighted in a conversation with TVN that there are travel agencies making trips for illegal immigrants, even reaching the central zone. Although there are immigrants who contribute to the country, “there are people who carry out criminal acts and have a way of operating that we are not used to in Chile,” he said.
Sofofa and unions are participating in a security roundtable with the government because “crime is an issue that is affecting the productive sectors, both in the northern macrozone and in the southern macrozone. For this reason, it is important that the government incorporate the help from the Armed Forces to stop crime,” he added.
“We all have to work, not only the government and the Armed Forces, but the businessmen, to take care of the country and disrupt the gangs that are attacking the copper transporters,” he said. Likewise, he refers to crime as a high priority because it is affecting all people, especially the most vulnerable.
“We are going to continue persevering in this because, if we do not, Chile will not be able to continue advancing on the path of development,” he said, adding that order has to be returned so that the institutions continue to function, but for that they need the support of citizenship.
