Monetary poverty in the North Macroregion of the country (Cajamarca, Áncash, La Libertad, Piura, Lambayeque, San Martín, Amazonas and Tumbes) affected 25.5% of the population, that is, one in four inhabitants, reported the National Society of Industries (SNI).
The union explained that in Cajamarca poverty reaches 39.7% of the population, followed by Amazonas (30.1%) and La Libertad (26.8%).
In this regard, Jesús Salazar Nishi, president of the SNI, explained that a relationship between high levels of poverty and informality can be seen in the northern regions.
“While Lambayeque presents an informality of 76.2%, in Cajamarca this index reaches 89.4%, that is, 9 out of 10 workers in the region work without access to benefits, such as vacations or social security.”, he referred.
On the other hand, the union pointed out that the inhabitants of the North Macroregion perceive a low real GDP per capita of S/ 10,555; that is, they have an average income that is a little higher than half of the GDP per capita of Lima (S/ 20,236).
In this sense, Salazar Nishi commented that this indicator, which is also lower than that of the southern (S/ 16,470) and central (S/ 12,603) macro-regions, is especially worrying, since the north represents 30% of the Economically Active Population. (PEA) occupied in the country.
For this reason, in order to provide proposals that promote the development of this macro-region, the SNI will present on August 24 the agenda “Peru North Macro-region by 2031″, made up of 75 strategies and 183 measures aimed at reactivating the productive engines of the north of the country, elaborated by the business sector and the academy of the area.
“Another great problem that the North Macroregion suffers from is the reduction in the participation of its industry in the GDP, since its contribution has gone from 12.8% to 10.7% of its total GDP from 2015 to 2021, which is in line with the decrease that the participation of the national manufacturing GDP has also suffered in recent years”, highlighted the union leader.
He gave La Libertad as an example of this situation, which has an underdeveloped industrial park and sectors in subsistence crisis, such as the footwear industry or the bodywork sector.
Paralyzed works
According to figures from the Comptroller’s Office, Cajamarca, Áncash, La Libertad, Piura, Lambayeque, San Martín, Amazonas and Tumbes have, together, some 717 paralyzed works, which represent an enormous potential for reactivating the construction sector and its supplier items. in the development of various infrastructures to serve the population and would increase the competitiveness of the benefited areas.
“The execution of the III Stage of Chavimochic is pending, essential to maintain macro-regional agricultural growthSalazar said.
He added that another great development opportunity for the Macroregion is constituted by the Northern Mining Belt, which integrates several regions, among which Cajamarca, Piura and La Libertad stand out.
