Six people remain missing after flood in Ecuador

Quito, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) At least six people are still missing after the flood registered three days ago in the capital of Ecuador, according to official data updated today.

During this day, the search and rescue teams continued work in the La Gasca neighborhood, the hardest hit by the avalanche of stones and mud released from the Pichincha volcano by heavy downpours reported last Monday.

Information offered by the mayor’s office reported the discovery of another body, which raised the number of deaths as a result of the natural disaster to 25.

The work will continue with a view to trying to find the citizens who are still wanted by their relatives.

On the other hand there are 52 wounded, four more than the day before and one of them remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, firefighters, the National Police, the Armed Forces and other institutions, including the Pichincha prefecture, are cleaning and removing debris from the streets and buildings damaged by the avalanche.

The alluvium dragged with vehicles, poles, traffic lights and garbage cans, while damaging homes, parks and commercial premises.

At least 174 houses were evaluated and of them 38 have partial damage and three completely collapsed, while 17 cars were rescued and delivered to their owners.

The victims receive humanitarian assistance provided by Quito residents, companies and the Guayaquil mayor’s office.

According to the authorities, the works could last at least a week, until the original state of the affected area is restored.
